Spain is a nice country from western Europe. It's surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea (south and east), the Cantabric Sea (north), the Atlantic Ocean and Portugal (all the west side). Spanish territory also includes the Canary Islands (near the African coast) and the Balearic Islands (in the Mediterranean). It shares land borders with France, Andorra, Portugal, Gibraltar and Morocco (Ceuta and Melilla). With an area of more than 500,000 km², Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe (behind France).
Spain has been a member of the European Union since 1986. It is the unique constitutional monarchy organised as a parliamentary democracy in Europe. Spain is a developed country with the ninth largest economy in the world and fifth largest in Europe.
